Before tackling the highest motorable passes on earth, every traveler halts at the whitewashed stupas of the Indus canyon. Five-color Lungta prayer flags snap violently in the sub-zero morning wind, each gust carrying ancient mantras across the Himalayan plateau.
THE BUTTER LAMP COURTYARD
Inside the thick rammed-earth and timber walls of the monastery, the air is dense with the aroma of burning juniper incense and pure yak butter. Over one hundred hand-hammered brass vessels glow steadily in rows, illuminating 500-year-old frescoes painted with crushed lapis lazuli and gold dust.
360° IMMERSIVE MONASTERY PANORAMA
Stand on the high terraced rooftop of Thiksey Monastery, 12,200 feet above sea level. Drag with your mouse or swipe with your finger to pan across the sacred courtyard, prayer wheels, and the snow-crested peaks of the Stok Kangri range.
THE HIGH WIND PASS
Climbing beyond the tree line into the alpine desert, the road narrows to frozen scree and icy switchbacks. At 17,582 feet, the air pressure drops by more than half. Supported by Ride & Fire's custom medical oxygen convoys, our riders cross the mountain spine between the Indus and the Shyok frontier.
THE STARLIT BASECAMP
At night, the Himalayan wilderness reveals cosmic depth found almost nowhere else on Earth. On the shores of crystal turquoise Pangong Tso, our heated luxury expedition domes glow like embers against the dark water, while the Milky Way arches across the 14,000-foot sky.
